Why We Built Nejobs: A Dedicated Job Portal for the North East India Workforce

When we began hiring in the North East in 2015, we assumed that finding local talent would be straightforward. After all, the region has numerous educational institutions, placement cells, and access to national job portals. Yet, in practice, hiring locally proved to be fragmented and inefficient—for both employers and job seekers.

Despite the presence of colleges and large hiring platforms, there was no single, reliable place to discover jobs in North East India or to connect employers with the region’s diverse workforce in a structured way.

Freshers Were Visible. The Broader Workforce Was Not.

Freshers and first-time job seekers were relatively easier to reach—especially through campus hiring and placement cells across cities in the North East. These channels play an important role in helping students take their first step into the workforce.

However, placement-driven hiring operates within academic cycles and institutional boundaries. It primarily serves final-year students and entry-level roles. Beyond this segment, the hiring ecosystem quickly begins to break down.

The real challenge emerged when we looked beyond campus recruitment.

The Invisible Gap: Experienced and Returning Professionals

A significant part of the North East workforce consists of experienced professionals, many of whom migrated earlier to metro cities for work. Over time, a large number of them either returned home permanently or actively began searching for opportunities closer to their families.

These professionals were skilled, work-ready, and motivated. Yet they were not visible to local employers in any consolidated way.

Pan-India job portals did not solve this problem. They did not attract enough region-specific job listings, nor did they function as an effective channel for employers focused on local hiring in North East India. As a result, experienced candidates and returning professionals remained scattered across informal networks, referrals, consultancies, and word-of-mouth channels.

At the same time, these job seekers—both freshers and experienced professionals—had no single place to discover local employers in the North East, understand who was hiring, or search for relevant regional job vacancies. Opportunities existed, but they were fragmented, difficult to find, and often accessible only through personal connections.

The Missing Hiring Infrastructure in the North East

For employers, the lack of a dedicated North East recruitment platform meant repeated dependence on consultancies and references. This limited access to narrower talent pools and reduced the likelihood of finding the best-fit candidates from the wider workforce already present in the region.

For job seekers, the absence of a central discovery platform meant uncertainty and missed opportunities. Many capable candidates were forced to either accept roles below their potential or migrate again—not because jobs did not exist, but because they were not discoverable.

What became clear was that this was not just a hiring challenge. It was an infrastructure gap.

Regions grow when talent can discover opportunity locally, when employers can hire beyond closed networks, and when migration becomes a choice rather than a necessity. Sustainable economic development requires local hiring infrastructure that supports freshers, experienced professionals, and returning talent alike.
